The "Lost Chime" expedition | Marine Geodesy
The 1XPEDITION research centre launched an expedition around the Valaam archipelago with divers from the Divo club, Marine Geodesy engineers, specialists from the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and an Ocean HD film crew.
The project searches for monastery treasures lost during evacuation in the Soviet-Finnish War, particularly the submerged bells of the St Nicholas skete. Searches in the area have continued since 2017 and have identified more than a hundred submerged objects and artefacts.
The expedition vessel Anastasia was adapted for diving, underwater filming and research. Marine Geodesy's engineers planned to combine three remote, non-destructive geophysical search methods. Archaeologists would examine evidence of the monastery's history and the development of the archipelago.
